Being in the market for this lens, it was with a lot of anticipation and excitement that we approached the Tamron booth to try it out. Tamron had a lot going on, as they have been very active in the lens market as of late. Upon trying out the lens, we were slightly let down by a few things – first and foremost, the size and heft (compared to the Canon and Nikon) and secondly with the rigidity of the zoom ring. It didn’t feel well balanced on a 50D or 5D (but that’s a subjective observation) However, according to reports, the image quality stacks up, and indeed probably bests the equivalent options from Canon and Nikon. In the end though, we’ll probably go with the Canon for its quality control, lighter weight, and the fact that it’s a Canon.
If you want top notch image quality and price is not a concern, then you probably want the new Canon 70-300L. If you want decent image quality at the best price, this is probably your best bet.
